What is a Four Piece Bathroom (4 Piece Bathroom)?
A four-piece bathroom (4-pc bath) is a restroom that has four plumbing fixtures: a sink, a toilet and two other fixtures. Other types of bathrooms you might see in a listing include 2-piece, 3-piece, 5-piece and 6-piece bathrooms.
Real Estate Agent Explains Four-piece Bathrooms
A 4 piece bathroom is the most common form of full bathroom. Most homes have a 4-piece bathroom upstairs near the bedrooms. Some homes also have 4-piece ensuite bathroom as well.
Four-piece bathrooms can be listed as a 4pc or 4-piece baths on real estate listings.
The four fixtures of a four-piece bath could technically be any of the following:
- Sink, toilet, shower, bathtub (most common by far)
- Sink, sink, toilet, bathtub
- Sink, sink toilet, shower
- Sink, toilet, shower, bidet
- Sink, toilet, bathtub, bidet
- Sink, toilet, double shower
Here is what some of the various layouts might look like (these layouts are just to show what different piece combinations could be used in a bathroom – they are not intended to be layouts for real bathrooms):
Please note that a double shower is not two separate showers; it’s a shower that has two separate controls and shower heads and can be used by two people at one time. Bathtub/shower combinations are counted as two fixtures, but a separate bathtub and shower could also happen – for example a stall shower and a separate tub.
Why Does It Matter?
Property listings don’t have much space to describe everything about a home, but just stating the number of fixtures has been an industry standard for a long time. As with all washrooms, you never know what the fixtures really are unless you see a picture or see the bathroom itself, so it is best not to just assume what those fixtures are. Four-pieces is four pieces but what those pieces actually are can vary.
